BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT TRUCK FUEL SAVINGS
In Canada, truck freight accounts for one third of transportation emissions*. Every litre of diesel we burn releases about 2.87 kg of CO2e. Across Alberta, that translates to 12.8 billion kg of carbon dioxide emissions from diesel-fired freight transport alone**. A 5% increase in fuel efficiency in Alberta’s freight transport industry would create a CO2e reduction of over 640 kilotonnes. That’s equivalent to taking 130,000 cars off the road. Clearly, fuel efficiency means money saved and a better environment. We welcome you to explore this site to find resources that will help you reduce fuel consumption, whether you run a single commercial vehicle or a fleet of transport trucks.
Working Toward Solutions
In 2005, the AGCC was formed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) and Alberta Minister of Environment and Minister of Infrastructure & Transportation. As a result of this MOU, the parties agreed to form a joint committee to study and act on methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the commercial trucking industry in Alberta. The MOU between the AMTA and the Government of Alberta, through Alberta Environment and Alberta Transportation, was renewed in 2009.
Industry sector MOU agreements were outlined as a major GHG initiative and tool in Alberta’s Climate Change Action Plan – Albertans & Climate Change: Taking Action (2002). The AMTA-GOA MOU was the first of its kind signed by an industry sector and the Government of Alberta in the area of GHG mitigation. In 2008, the Government of Alberta renewed its commitment towards mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change with the provincial 2008 Climate Change Strategy.
The AGCC is currently made up of volunteer members of AMTA, Alberta Environment, Alberta Transportation & Infrastructure, CF Managing Movement, Climate Change Central, Duckering’s Transport, ECL Transportation, Exalta and Rosenau Transport.
