BEST PRACTICES

Truck Fuel Savings Best PracticesThis website provides links to some of the best resources for fuel efficiency and better fleets in Alberta. Here you will find updates about new workshops and driver education programs, incentives, regulations and more. It’s the way AMTA and the AGCC are working to bring you the information you need, all in one convenient place.

Transportation accounts for a full third of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions, and all of those emissions are related to buying and burning fuel. The good news: it has never been easier to save, thanks to the resources collected for you on this website. Make the best of your fleet, whether it’s evaluating one single technology or looking at combinations of improvements.

For example, to help make sense of all of the options, the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has launched a program called EnviroTruck, showing how a combination of newer engines, aerodynamic add-ons and consistent speed can add up to over 20% fuel savings—translating into cash in hand and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

For a full overview of the potential savings from each kind of upgrade, see the Rocky Mountain Institute publication, Truck Efficiency and GHG Reduction Opportunities in the Canadian Trucking Fleet.

Throughout this site and the linked resources, you will find information about payback periods for efficiency technologies, benefits of new fuels, and programs you can use to save significant amounts of money (and greenhouse gas emissions in the process). Some opportunities are obvious, while others are outside the truck (like fuel management, fleet metrics and driver training).
